Have you ever had someone pop into your head out of nowhere, someone you haven’t talked to in forever, and it just won’t stop? Or did you feel drained, perhaps anxious after thinking about an old fight, an ex, or even a family member? That weird, lingering pull? Yeah... that’s probably an energy cord.
These cords are invisible threads that connect us to people, places, and even spirits. Some are sweet and comforting, while others are straight-up soul-sucking. Imagine them like emotional extension cords, with energy flowing both ways until one side keeps pulling and leaves you feeling depleted.
In this blog, I will share with you my input on what these cords are, how they get attached, how to tell if you have one, and what to do when it’s time to cut that shit loose, for real. You don’t need to stay tangled up in stuff that no longer serves you.
I’ve been there too. And if no one’s told you yet, you can break free.
What Are Energy Cords, and Are They Always Bad?
Energy cords are spiritual threads formed through intense emotions, such as love, sex, betrayal, and grief, that connect us to someone or something long after the moment has passed.
Can cords be good? Yes. Loving cords with family, pets, ancestors, or deities can feel warm and supportive.
Can cords be toxic? Absolutely. When the energy is one-sided, controlling, or obsessive, it becomes a drain. And it doesn’t always disappear on its own.
Where does this idea come from? Spiritual cords are found in traditions across the world, from karmic bonds in Hinduism and Buddhism to ancestor cords in Espiritismo and energetic links in witchcraft.

Section 1: How Energy Cords Are Formed?
Let’s be real, energy cords don’t just show up out of nowhere. They’re formed when energy gets exchanged or entangled. Sometimes we open the door wide; other times, it opens without us even noticing. Either way, cords form when something, or someone, gets into your energy field, gravity, and stays there.
This is how it happens:
Big Emotions = Big Cords
The stronger the emotion, the stronger the cord. Love, heartbreak, grief, rage, fear, any intense moment when your energy is cracked wide open can create a bond.
Example: You had a soul-crushing breakup, and you still feel them in your chest months (or years) later. That’s a cord, not a memory.
Sex Always Leaves a Thread
Sex is a full-on energy exchange, whether it’s candlelit and sacred or quick and messy. It ties people together, especially when one person is more open, vulnerable, or emotionally charged than the other.
Example: You hooked up with someone, and now they keep showing up in your dreams. That’s not just overthinking, it’s a sacral cord still pulsing.
Spiritual + Magical Work
Any time you work with someone’s energy, or they work with yours, cords can form. This includes:
Spellwork (love, healing, domination, etc.)
Readings, limpias, or spiritual cleansing
Spirit contact or ancestor work
You opened a door. You did the work…, but didn’t close the energy properly. Boom. Cord.
Example: You did a healing spell on someone, and now you feel exhausted whenever they call. Their energy is still hooked into you.
Repetition and Obsession
Even without a single conversation, cords can form just by thinking about someone constantly. Hate-watching their stories, replaying old fights, or just plain obsessing over what went wrong? That energetic thread gets thicker every time you feed it.
Example: You block someone and still stalk their page like a full-time job. That’s a self-fed cord right there.
Unspoken Feelings or Unfinished Energy
Sometimes cords don’t come from what we said or did, but from what we didn’t. Unspoken love. Hidden shame. A goodbye that never happened. That energy just sits there, and cords form around it like scar tissue.
Example: You never got closure, and it still haunts you. That’s a cord refusing to close until you deal with it.

Section 2: Signs You Might Be Corded
Healthy Cord Signs:
You feel calm, grounded, or protected
Warm dreams or intuitive connections
Energy flows both ways
Toxic Cord Signs:
Obsessive thoughts about someone
Mood swings, anxiety, or nausea when you think of them
Dreams or flashbacks you can’t shake
You feel like someone’s "pulling" on you energetically
Feeling spiritually stalked

🛲 Section 3: Where Cords Attach (Witch’s Perspective)
Cords usually attach at chakras, which are your energy centers.
Crown (Top of Head): Past Life Bonds + Spiritual Contracts
This is where cords from other lifetimes or soul agreements attach. Ever meet someone and feel like you’ve known them forever, or feel strangely repelled with no reason? That’s a crown cord. These cords often show up as a spiritual pull, deja vu, or dreams with people you barely know. They’re deep, invisible ties that come from before this life even started.
Third Eye: Intuition, Dreams, and Spiritual Perception
This chakra sits right between your eyebrows and governs intuition, inner sight, and psychic awareness. If someone’s been invading your dreams, messing with your spiritual clarity, or causing mental confusion, this is where the cord is likely attached. You might experience doubt, fogginess, or feel blocked from your inner voice.
Heart: Romantic + Emotional Cords
These are the cords that hit the hardest. They come from love, grief, friendship, and betrayal. You’ll feel these when you keep thinking about someone long after the connection ended… or when your heart clenches up at the sound of their name.
Sacral/Womb: Sexual Energy + Creative Loss
These cords form through sex, intimacy, and even loss through miscarriage or abortion. They attach where you create and feel desire, and they’re some of the hardest to break. If you’ve ever felt someone “lingering” after a one-night stand, or like your creative fire was dimmed after heartbreak, you have felt a sacral cord.
Solar Plexus: Control, Power Struggles + Manipulation
This is your personal power center, and cords here come from people who tried to dominate or break your will. Think: narcissistic exes, abusive parents, toxic bosses, or even friends who always had to be “above” you. If someone made you doubt yourself, question your worth, or feel small, that cord might still be plugged in right here.
Throat: Silencing, Shame + Unspoken Words
These cords show up when you were made to keep quiet. Maybe you never got to say what you really felt. Perhaps you held back to keep the peace. Maybe your truth was punished. If your throat locks up around certain people, or you’re haunted by words you wish you’d said, that’s a throat cord.
Hands + Feet: Service Cords + Stuck Paths
These cords come from what you do for others, especially when it’s one-sided. You might feel like someone’s constantly draining your time, energy, or direction in life. If you feel “tied down,” pulled away from your path, or guilted into staying in situations you’ve outgrown… the cords might be in your hands and feet.

Section 4: You Can’t Just Cut It—Some Cords Need to Be Dug Out
Some cords break on their own, through growth, clarity, or distance.
But deep cords? They grow roots. They feed off your spirit. And if you only cut the surface, they come back stronger.
Signs a cord is deeply rooted:
Repeating toxic patterns
Feeling haunted by a person or event
Dreams, visions, or spiritual tugs that won’t stop
These cords need extraction, "spiritual surgery", not just snipping.
A Witch’s Visualization: Digging the Root
To entirely remove a deep cord, you need to see it, not just cut it.
In meditation or ritual, visualize the cord as a thick root growing inside your body. Trace it to where it’s plugged in, your heart, your womb, your mind, and dig it out with intention.
Use your hands in real life or imagine a blade, a claw, a glowing tool, whatever feels powerful to you. Pull it out slowly, and feel the energy release as it unravels.
When it’s out, don’t leave the wound raw. Plant something healing inside it. Imagine filling the space with light, a symbol, a new intention, or a protective plant spirit. Let it root and grow where the pain once lived.
This isn’t just symbolic, it’s soul work. You’re telling your energy: This is done. I’ve reclaimed this space!
Meditation is essential here. This isn’t a rush job; it’s a personal healing rite. Take your time, breathe, and go deep. When you're done, cleanse yourself and seal the wound.

Section 5: Cords Created Through Spells, Hexes, and Curses
Not all cords are emotional. Some are cast through magic.
Spells that form cords:
Love bindings and obsession spells
Domination and control work
Curses, crossings, spiritual bindings
Ancestral or generational hexes
These cords are active, intentional, and dangerous. You might feel like you’re tied to someone or something you never agreed to.
Destroy these cords with:
Banishing herbs (sulfur, cayenne, rue)
Black candles, reversal jars, mirror boxes
Spirit allies like La Santa Muerte, Kali, Ogun, or Erzulie Dantor
Fire, smoke, and spoken banishment

Section 6: Reclaiming Your Power After the Cut
After cutting cords, you must cleanse, seal, and call your power back.
Rituals to Reclaim Your Energy:
1. Cleanse: Salt + rue, rosemary, or hyssop. Smoke with frankincense or tobacco.
2. Call Back: “What was lost, I now recall. What was mine returns in full.”
3. Seal: Protection oil on chakras, mirrors, amulets, black salt lines, charm bags.
Cord-cutting isn’t about erasing the past. It’s about choosing not to be ruled by it anymore.
